Over vacation while eating way too much road food the family decided we needed to clean up our act when we got home and thought we would go light and healthy upon our return. After talking about that a little, doing a little research and learning that going vegan may kill us, we decided on pescetarian -after looking it up!
So, this week we have eaten Crab, Alaskan Snow Crab, veggie potstickers and Shrimp Tacos as well as a host of new veggies. The sauteed beets with Sauteed beet greens and a balsamic reduction sauce actually rendered me speechless!
Now to complement this switch, whenever we added in a creamy sauce to those sea creatures, we also enjoyed a wine that was similarly off the proverbial beaten track. Next time you're enjoying lobster or crab along with a creamy cheese or sauce, make it your mission to find a white Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Most everyone knows about the Grenache and Syrah based reds but few know of the 11% of wines from this famed region in France's Southern Rhone Valley that are white.
The one we chose is Domaine de Nalys, Eicelenci, Chateauneuf-du-Pape AC, France, 2010, 14% abv. White CdP wine allows six kinds of grapes - Grenache blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Picardan, and Picpoul. This Nalys is a blend with aromatic Roussanne taking the lead.
We are closing in on the end of the week and everyone agreed that it was not a hardship in our household to go without red meat and I think we will keep it up to a certain extent. Just know that tomorrow it will be a feeding frenzy at Jeffrey's Hamburgers while we raise money there for Hillview Middle School 8th Grade Graduation.
