Crab Season!

It is finally crab season here in the San Francisco Bay Area! We started our evening with the amazing Mt. Tam Triple Cream cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and just to make it really over the top, we drizzled the top generously with local truffle honey created by the venerable Restaurant LuLu in The City. We then felt we should eat our greens and served a salad chock full of Farmer's Market mixed lettuces and seasonal fruits thinly sliced; persimmon, apples and mandarin oranges.

We served up the fresh local crab simply steamed. It had already been cracked and cleaned by my friends at Whole Foods - who had the name of the guy who brought in the Crab! Then just to make the whole thing entirely too decadent, we had a side of the legendary Fred's Steak from Schaub's Meat, Fish & Poultry Market at the Stanford Mall in Palo Alto. The recipe is a closely guarded secret and if you have not tried it, it is really something special. Rumor is it includes Coca Cola, but I truly have no idea. And... just so you know, we served this whole thing to a gaggle of kids as well with a side of mashed potatoes and we had a happy, quiet crowd working intensely to get more and more crab and clean their plates.

For the adults, we augmented this delectable dinner with a bottle of Jordan's 2010 Chardonnay.  Located in the beautiful Russian River Valley and part of Sonoma County, this area is renowned for its cooler weather which ensures the grapes do not over ripen and retain their high acidity. These characteristics are evident in this vintage of the Jordan chardonnay and complemented the richness of the crab and cheese along with the fruit in the salad beautifully.

This deep lemon wine is youthful and exudes a steely minerality with Granny Smith apple, Bergamot lime, lemon rind, guava and a little passion fruit.  The palate is dry and refreshingly juicy with medium (+) acidity.  The flavours of pink grapefruit, more lime and lemon, green apple, more tropical fruit (green pineapple and green mango) and a hint of vanilla pod from the light oak.

Alongside the crab, triple cream cheese, truffle honey, fresh salad and a side of steak - the chardonnay was an elegant and classy dining companion.
