Pescetarian for a week!

Over vacation while eating way too much road food the family decided we needed to clean up our act when we got home and thought we would go light and healthy upon our return. After talking about that a little, doing a little research and learning that going vegan may kill us, we decided on pescetarian -after looking it up!

So, this week we have eaten Crab, Alaskan Snow Crab, veggie potstickers and Shrimp Tacos as well as a host of new veggies. The sauteed beets with Sauteed beet greens and a balsamic reduction sauce actually rendered me speechless!

Crab Season!

It is finally crab season here in the San Francisco Bay Area! We started our evening with the amazing Mt. Tam Triple Cream cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and just to make it really over the top, we drizzled the top generously with local truffle honey created by the venerable Restaurant LuLu in The City. We then felt we should eat our greens and served a salad chock full of Farmer's Market mixed lettuces and seasonal fruits thinly sliced; persimmon, apples and mandarin oranges.

We served up the fresh local crab simply steamed.

Sugar Plums Exist!

Here at The Festive Table we love a challenge. So, last year around this time, together with a group of adventurous kids, we tried to make Sugar Plums. We were unsuccessful though and although the goop we made tasted great, it looked terrible and I can't imagine it ever would have made itself into a Sugar Plum.

After some time, we have perfected our recipe and you will be surprised to know that it contains NO plums and a surprisingly low amount of sugar. We are smitten with this dark, rich little treat and plan to make it and serve it all throughout the holidays!

MPAEF Boutique

The holidays are nigh and The Festive Table participated again this year in the 4th annual MPAEF fundraiser Chic Boutique - at The Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park.

We still have a few Snickerdoodles left, so send a note right away for home delivery before Thanksgiving!

The event featured champagne and hors d'oeuvres sprinkled liberally amongst the gifts and people. The Willow Market in Menlo Park generously offered to donate much of the sparkling wine that will be served.

You should know that Willow Market is a local favorite, always supports local charities and has a huge wine selection for the size of their market.

Happy wine drinking after happy kid cooking

Teaching the after school class has been rewarding for all of us at The Festive Table. It requires a tremendous amount of preparation time - not to mention incredible patience and enthusiasm to handle a room filled with 9 year olds with access to fire and knives - and it is amazing to see just how much stuff needs to get scrubbed just to get back to normal at the end.

But then when I am out in the world and run into a mom who (with tears in her eyes) tells me that her son is now excited about zucchini, I know we have done more than just our job.
